Descrizione

La sottofamiglia comprende specie mwegerbacee, mwewarbustive o mwfarampicanti, con mwfqfoglie opposte, ricche di mwfglatice.cite-ref-foz-2-0[2]
I mwhafiori, mwhqermafroditi, mwhgattinomorfi, sono usualmente disposti in mwhwinfiorescenze a mwiacima.cite-ref-foz-2-1[2]
Il mwjgpolline della maggior parte delle Periplocoideae si presenta aggregato in semplici strutture granulari, dette mwjwtetradi polliniche, presenti in numero di quattro per ogni mwkaantera; in alcuni generi (mwkqmwkgDecalepis, mwkwEpistemma, mwlqFinlaysonia, mwlwGymnanthera, mwmqHemidesmus, mwmwSchlechterella, mwnqStreptocaulon) le tetradi sono agglutinate a formare dei piccoli ammassi globulari (dette mwnwpollinii o pollinodii) simili a quelli descritti nelle mwoaOrchidaceae. Tanto le tetradi che i pollinii sono esposti, dopo l'mwoqantesi, in strutture specializzate dette traslatori: il traslatore è costituito da una struttura di supporto a forma di cucchiaio munita di un disco adesivo, che aderisce agli mwoginsetti impollinatori. I mwsafrutti sono composti da due mwsqfollicoli. I mwsgsemi sono spesso dotati di un ciuffo di peli setosi, che ne facilita la mwswdispersione anemocora.cite-ref-foz-2-2[2]

Distribuzione e habitat

La sottofamiglia è diffusa in mwawEuropa, mwbaAfrica continentale, mwbqMadagascar, mwbgAsia e mwbwAustraliacite-ref-venter2001-6-0[6].

La maggior parte delle specie si trova nelle mwdqforeste tropicali e nelle mwdgsavane della mwdwzona tropicale e subtropicale, ma alcune specie crescono anche nella mweamacchia mediterranea dell'Europa e del mweqNord Africa (mwegmwewPeriploca spp.) e negli ambienti aridi semi-desertici (p.es.mwfamwfqPeriploca aphylla, mwfgEctadium spp., mwgaRaphionacme spp.)cite-ref-venter2001-6-1[6].

In mwhwItalia è segnalata la specie mwiamwiqPeriploca graeca, originaria del Mediterraneo nord-orientale, introdotta come mwigpianta ornamentale e mwiwnaturalizzata in diverse regioni: in mwjaToscana nel mwjqParco naturale di Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccolicite-ref-7[7], in mwkgPuglia (mwkwParco naturale regionale Bosco e paludi di Rauccio, mwlalaghi Alimini, mwlqRiserva naturale Le Cesinecite-ref-8[8]); in passato segnalata in mwmgCalabria (boschi di Rosarno, non più ritrovata)cite-ref-9[9].
